What counts as a non-runner

Won't start? Won't move? It counts, and so does anything that isn't safe to ride. To sell a non-running quad you don't need to diagnose it first. Tell us what it does and doesn't do, and we'll take it from there.

Won't start or flat battery

Most common of all. Batteries die over winter. Fuel left in the tank goes stale over the same months and gums up the carburettor, so a quad that ran fine in the autumn just coughs by spring. Maybe it's a small fix, but you haven't the time.

Seized engine

An engine that won't turn over by hand, or that ran without oil or coolant. Everything else on it still has value.

Crash or roll damage

A twisted frame, or a roll cage folded flat. Photograph the damage from a few angles.

Missing parts or keys

Half-stripped projects are fine, and so are machines with the key long gone. Tell us upfront what's missing: it changes the price, and with no key we look even harder at proof that it's yours.

Dead e-bike battery or controller

Electric dirt bikes fail differently. Usually it's a battery that won't take a charge, or a BMS (battery management system) that has shut the pack down. Sometimes the controller has burnt out. Frame and forks still count. More on selling an electric dirt bike.

Flood or fire damage

Tell us exactly what happened. Some flooded or burnt machines are only worth their parts, and we'll say so plainly.

How we price a non-runner

We start from what the machine would be worth running, then take off what it needs. The better we understand the fault, the firmer the offer.

Tell us what you know

When did it last run? What did it do before it stopped? Anything you've tried is useful too. "Cranks but won't fire" beats "broken", though not knowing is fine.

Photos worth taking

Take both sides, plus the frame number. Get the dash too if it lights up. For an e-bike we'd like to see the battery and charger. Photos also help us decide whether it's worth fixing or worth more as parts.

Sat in the barn for years?

Yes, we'll still look at it. Quads and Gators get parked up when a farm changes hands or a job never gets finished, and years later they're under a tarp with flat tyres and a nest in the airbox.

Don't wash it and don't try to start it, as cranking an engine that has sat for years can do more damage. Photograph it as it is.

We winch it on

You don't need to push it anywhere. Our trailer has a winch, and we'll pull the machine out of whatever barn or garage it's in. Flat tyres and locked wheels don't stop it. Collection is free.

The paperwork is the same as for a runner: we'll want photo ID and the V5C or the invoice from when it was bought, and we look at the frame number. The transfer goes to your account, and after that the winch comes out. Our step-by-step selling process covers each stage.

Better than scrap

A scrap yard weighs a machine. We value it. Scrap weight on a quad or UTV comes to very little, but someone who can fix it or strip it for parts sees far more in it. That's what we are. A seized farm quad still has diffs and a wiring loom that other people need. A crashed buggy often has a good engine.

Most Sur-Ron, Talaria, Stark Varg and E Ride Pro models are not road legal. They're for private land with the landowner's permission, and tracks. We never suggest riding a non-road-legal bike on public roads.
