What affects a Honda quad's price
High hours on a working TRX
Farm Hondas run up big hours and keep going. A straight frame tells us as much as the meter does.
Front diff and 4WD engagement
4WD should engage without a clunk and the front diff should run quiet. Mention any whine.
The letter after the model code
M is manual, E is electric shift, A is automatic. An ES or DCT that sticks in a gear is priced as a repair.
A P for power steering
A P in the code (FPM, say) means power steering. On a farm Honda it adds real value, if it works.
Swingarm or independent rear
Most farm Hondas have a solid rear axle on a swingarm, good for towing. Some Rancher automatics have independent rear suspension.

Honda's farm quads come first
If you want to sell your Honda quad, there's a good chance it's a TRX 420 or a TRX 500. You'll find those two in farmyards all over the country, often with a trailer hitch and a rack full of fencing gear.
TRX 420 FourTrax
Launched for 2007 with fuel injection, and sold in the US as the Rancher. It's the lighter Honda, and you'll find it on sheep farms and smallholdings.
TRX 500 Foreman and Rubicon
The bigger Honda. Foremans have a manual or electric-shift box. Rubicons are automatics. In late 2019 the larger-engined TRX 520 took over, and we buy those too.
Everything else with a TRX badge
Old TRX 350 Ranchers still earn their keep on farms, and so do 400 Foremans and 300s. For racing there's the TRX450R and TRX400EX, both often modified. Here's how we value a tuned or standard sports quad. Honda's youth quad is the TRX90X, covered on our page for outgrown kids' quads.
Why the gearbox letter matters
Look at the letters in the model code. They tell you the gearbox, and the gearbox changes the price.
Manual (M)
Foot change, and the clutch looks after itself, so there's nothing on the bars to pull. It's the simplest of the three.
Electric shift (E or ES)
Buttons on the handlebar change gear. The faults owners report most are the angle sensor and the shift motor, and a weak battery can upset it too. Stuck in one gear? We price the repair in.
Automatic (A)
Older Rubicons used Honda's Hondamatic; newer Rubicons and Rancher automatics use a dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Tell us which, and whether it shifts cleanly.
A TRX that won't start, or won't shift
Say the ES has given up and your Foreman is stranded in first. It still has a price. So does a TRX 350 with a seized engine, because working Hondas everywhere need diffs and running gear. It needn't roll: the trailer has a winch. Our non-runner buying page explains collection day.
Honda frame numbers: look at the front
Honda stamps the frame number into the front of the frame on its utility quads. The TRX 420 owner's manual confirms that spot and puts the engine number high on the rear crankcase. Other models can differ, so our guide to locating a quad's frame number covers the rest.
A road-registered TRX has that number on its V5C, and a farm Honda sold new should have it on the dealer invoice, so on the day we read it off the frame and make sure the two agree before any money moves. How old a Honda quad will you buy?
Any age. Older TRX 350s and 400s still work on farms, so they still have a value.
Does the ES gearbox affect the price?
It can. A working electric shift is fine; a faulty angle sensor or shift motor is a commonly reported repair, and we price it in.
Do you buy the TRX 520?
Yes. They replaced the 500s, and any condition is fine.
Our Foreman never went on the road. Is the invoice enough?
Usually, yes. Most farm Hondas were never registered, so a dealer invoice is normal. We check the frame number against it.
