Selling a quad bike in Folkestone and Cheriton

Folkestone is CT19 and CT20. That includes Cheriton beside the Channel Tunnel terminal, and Sandgate on the coast road to Hythe. Most machines in town come from homes: an electric dirt bike, a kids' quad the children have outgrown. Every so often it's a sports quad that's been gathering dust in a Cheriton garage for years.

Most Sur-Ron, Talaria, Stark Varg and E Ride Pro models are not road legal. They're for private land with the landowner's permission, and tracks. We never suggest riding a non-road-legal bike on public roads.

Hawkinge and the Elham valley

The North Downs rise straight up behind Folkestone. Most of the farmland up there is protected as part of the Kent Downs. It's sheep and arable on the tops, in small fields reached by narrow lanes. Hawkinge beside the old RAF airfield and Capel-le-Ferne on the cliff top by the Battle of Britain Memorial are both CT18, a postcode they share with Densole and Lyminge. Elham, further up the valley, has a CT4 postcode but the same kind of farms.

Sheep on the chalk means steep, rough grass. Brakes go faster than on flat land. So do CV joints and tyres. It's priced in. It won't put us off. The lanes out to Lyminge and Elham are tight, so tell us the gateway width and whether there are low branches.

Hythe and the Royal Military Canal

Hythe is CT21. Saltwood and Lympne are too, while Sellindge just inland is TN25. Below the escarpment the land flattens out past Port Lympne to the canal, and down there the grazing and the dykes look more like the Romney Marsh stock farms next door than anything up on the downs. Mixed farms and estates between Postling and Sellindge run side-by-sides for fencing and feeding stock. Some only come out on shoot days.

M20 junctions 11 to 13 and the climb to Hawkinge

For Hythe and Sellindge it's junction 11 of the M20; junctions 12 and 13 serve Cheriton and Folkestone. Up to Hawkinge and Densole it's the A260, climbing onto the downs, while the A259 follows the coast from Hythe through Sandgate.
